Travertine Coverage Calculator
Enter your project area and tile size to get square footage, pieces, and a recommended waste allowance. Works for travertine, marble, and limestone tile, pavers, and pool deck installations.
Your project
Tile or paver size
Straight-lay, square rooms
Grid layouts on rectangular patios and interior floors with few cuts.
Diagonal & running bond
45° installations, brick patterns, and most pool decks.
French pattern & curves
Multi-size French pattern, curved pool coping, and complex cuts.
How to use the calculator
- 1. Measure your area. For rectangular spaces, multiply length × width in feet. For irregular shapes, break the area into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.
- 2. Pick your tile size. Choose a preset or enter custom dimensions in inches. The calculator converts to square feet per piece automatically.
- 3. Set the waste allowance. Use 10% for simple layouts, 15% for diagonal or running-bond, and 20% for French pattern or heavy cuts around pools and curves.
- 4. Order the total shown. Natural stone varies lot to lot — always order the full quantity in one shipment to keep color and veining consistent.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I add for a travertine installation?
Order 10% extra for straight-lay patterns on square rooms, 15% for diagonal or running-bond layouts, and 20% for French pattern, complex cuts, or pool coping with curved edges. This covers cutting waste, breakage, and future repairs.
How do I calculate pool deck coverage?
Measure the deck area in square feet (length × width for rectangles, or sum of sections for irregular shapes) and add 15–20% waste. For the pool perimeter, measure the linear feet of coping separately — coping is sold by linear foot, not square foot.
How many pieces of 16" × 24" travertine are in a square foot?
A 16" × 24" travertine paver covers 2.667 square feet per piece, so one square foot equals 0.375 pieces. For 100 sq ft you need approximately 38 pieces before waste, or 44 pieces with a 15% waste allowance.
Should I keep extra tiles after the job is done?
Yes. Keep at least 5–10 sq ft of each stone in a dry indoor space. Natural travertine and marble vary lot to lot, so future repairs made from the same order will blend far better than a fresh purchase.
Do I need to order more for French pattern?
French pattern uses four tile sizes in a repeating module and always generates more offcuts. Order 20% extra — occasionally 25% for pools with tight curves — and confirm the mix ratio with your supplier before ordering.
